So a few days back I wrote a review on My Game, the final game is this absurd little series of meta-styled horror games I made when I was younger. I did NOT like it. But since I did a review on the final game, why not do one on the FIRST game? Personally, I actually think this one is better. The way it changes from just another crappy memefest to a horror game is pretty decent. However, the character you play as is just like [] from My Game, where they don’t really have ANY character to them. What makes them better than [], though, is that they actually have dialogue to attribute to the story and go on a bit of an existential crisis. Also, I like the bit with Tog Tog making a show out of his game-altering abilities, and I wish I expanded on that concept more. To add to that, those bits where that scary drone ambience seeped into the music whenever the main character would say no to Tog Tog were actually pretty spoopy. Unfortunately, the rest of the game is basically just walking, and every NPC you meet, just like My Game, has extremely similar dialogue. The fact the game is so in your face about the meta elements is pretty bad too, like there is ZERO subtlety. I’ll say, the aspect of subtle meta horror is definitely a better accomplishment for My Game, because it’s not as “UUUUUH WE’RE IN A GAME UUUUUH” as this one. The ending is pretty unique though, because it gives the player a choice between going with Tog Tog to the real world or staying in the game’s world. That begs the question though, if this is supposed to have “really happened” (Which it didn’t), does that mean two universes were created or something? We never even see this player character in any future games in the series. A bit of a sidenote, Tog Tog’s design when leaving the game world is the most generic analog horror thing I have ever seen. He’s just a goopy shadow with spooky eyes. How “unique,”
Overall, just like My Game, this one’s pretty bad, but it’s not as bad some of the others.
