El protagonista juvenil, de nombre JC, visita por primera vez la biblioteca de Monachil, en la montaña de Sierra Nevada, por un libro de investigación, y cómo que en el servicio de referencia no hay, tiene que explorar la biblioteca en busca del libro. El libro trata sobre la historia de un anillo que está maldito. A lo largo de la visita, va aprendiendo que hay varios servicios en la biblioteca que no tienen que ver sólo con los libros.
